We recently wrapped up a stunning floor refinishing project in South Jordan, Utah, where our clients — first-time homeowners — called on us to bring some life back into their tired, dated hickory hardwood floors.

After 20+ years of daily wear and sun exposure, the old oil-based polyurethane finish had developed the classic ambering effect — that yellow-orange tint caused by UV degradation. It was time for a fresh start, and these new homeowners wanted a lighter, more modern look that would last.

Hickory is one of the hardest domestic hardwoods on the Janka Hardness Scale. That makes it extremely durable — but it also poses unique refinishing challenges:

• The tight, dense grain resists deep stain penetration
• Darker colors often turn blotchy or uneven on hickory
• Sanding can be more difficult if the previous finish is gummy or thick

But here’s the thing: this job may have been the smoothest refinish in our company’s history.
The old finish and stain sanded off like a magic eraser, clean and consistent. It was a dream scenario.

The clients were decisive, informed, and awesome to work with. They knew they wanted a lighter tone that wouldn’t compete with their cabinetry or modern interior color scheme — something in the realm of white oak.

They were originally curious about:

• Natural
• Twig
• Medium Brown

But as a professional who’s been doing this for years, I knew those wouldn’t hit the mark. I could tell instinctively that Birch would strike the perfect balance: light, airy, modern — with enough variation to showcase hickory’s natural charm without overwhelming it.

So I put down a Bona DriFast Birch sample paired with Pallmann Pall-X Power in Ultra Matte, and just like that… they were ecstatic.

One of the major upgrades in this project wasn’t just the look — it was the longevity.

That old oil-based finish that turned orange? We replaced it with Pallmann’s Pall-X Power, a premium 2-component water-based polyurethane that:

• Won’t amber or yellow over time
• Holds up under heavy foot traffic
• Has a satin to ultra-matte sheen that looks natural and elegant
• Meets the needs of modern homeowners (and their kids, pets, and furniture)

This floor will stay true to its color, sheen, and clarity for years to come.
